We started up our kids paddling program with the hope of creating a paddling community for kids and families. We have witnessed how hard the pandemic has been on families, and especially kids. The goal of the program is to bring kids of all abilities together to learn, play, and grow.
During the summer months, our kids program will move to Wednesday nights from 5pm - 8pm. Come join us at Whitewater Wednesdays. Please select "Whitewater Wednesdays" from the drop down menu under lessons, located at the top of the page. Whitewater Wednesdays will meet either at River Run Park in Sheridan, CO, or the Golden Whitewater Park, depending on flows. Information is provided in the Whitewater Wednesday confirmation email.
Our winter program for kids is Sundays at the Golden Rec Center from 6-8pm This will occur from Feb 11th - June 2024. Our pool sessions introduce kids of all abilities to the basics of kayaking, working towards more advanced skills. For the first time kayakers, participants will learn parts and pieces of the kayak, other equipment needed, and how to wet exit. We will advance to bow rescues, a variety of kayak rolls, and play boating skills. Instruction is included on Tuesday nights, and kids are encouraged to try hard things and have fun playing games in the pool.
Kids under the age of 8 will need an adult present. Any children who are unable to swim must bring a life jacket or use one from the pool.
We are offering open pool sessions for kids through age 18. No experience is necessary, and instruction is included for this particular open pool. We will have boats and gear available, although gear is available on a first come, first serve basis. Sessions will take place on SUNDAYS from 6-8 pm at the Golden Community Center. We will break into groups to work on skills and come back together for some fun games at the end of each session. Online advanced registration is required. This pool session is dedicated to getting more Colorado kids out on the water and building the Colorado kids' paddling community. For interest in volunteering to teach, please contact our office or Lyle Phetteplace.
